The ferry runs on Saturdays from 9-5, and Sundays from Noon-5, mid April through October.

Two hundred years ago, there were a thousand poled ferries carrying people across rivers andstreams throughout the United States. Today the Hatton Ferry is the last hand poled ferry operating in the United States. A ride on the ferry is a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of the James River and to get a glimpse of a simpler way of life. A small exhibit explores the history of the ferry, and visitors may ride across the river at no charge (although donations are accepted) if water levels permit.
