Highland is the home of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, and is adjacent to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. Purchased by Monroe in 1793 and home to the Monroe family for nearly 25 years, Highland—a part of William and Mary, Monroe’s alma mater—offers tours each day, hosts community and private events, and features a robust museum gift shop.

The Museum Shop offers an eclectic selection of gifts including artisanal foods, holiday and home decor, toys, and linens. Visitors can take home or share a piece of Virginia from the Artisans Room, which showcases locally and regionally handmade pottery, unique woodwork, fibers, stained glass, candles, quilts, leather goods, and stylish jewelry from over 20 ACV Juried Artisans. The Museum Shop also carries an exclusive collection of items in the areas of political, social, and cultural history. In addition to carefully selected Highland memorabilia and historical keepsakes, we also carry an extensive line of books covering Monroe’s life and political accomplishments, as well as other books concerning the time period.

From April through October, consider staying for lunch. Enjoy a lovely selection of locally made sandwiches and salads.
