The beautiful and charming Airwell Bed and Breakfast takes its name from the first known owner of the property, Lucien Whiting Powell, the famous landscape artist who lived here from 1870-1930. After the Civil War, Powell became a student at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and studied art under American landscape painters, Thomas and Edward Moran. It was after further study abroad that Powell purchased Airwell as his summer home. He remodeled one of the outbuildings into his art studio, which is now one of our cottages known as “Powell’s Studio”. It is from this studio that Powell would paint watercolors of the Virginia countryside. In addition, he would paint scenes of Venice, the Holy Land, and the Grand Canyon, which he would sketch on his travels. President Theodore Roosevelt was one of the first to recognize Powell’s worth as a landscape artist. President Hoover also owned several of Powell’s Grand Canyon paintings.

In the grand foyer of Airwell, you will find a breathtaking watercolor painting of Venice, painted by Powell in 1895. In the quaint library, you will see two small paintings done by Powell, one of the Airwell estate and the other, a Florida lighthouse.

The historic Airwell Bed and Breakfast is located on 5 beautiful acres of mature trees, extensive gardens, fountains, stone fencing, and views of the Blue Ridge Mts. It is the perfect location for touring the Artisan Trail sites, wineries, breweries, as well as hiking the Appalachian Trail, or biking on the WO&D path.

At our romantic B&B, we offer two unique private cottages, as well as two elegant rooms in the main house. Beautifully restored, Powell’s Studio is the original art studio of artist, Lucien Powell. This quaint accommodation maintains its charm of the late 1800s with the original beadboard ceiling and walls. This cozy cottage has a separate bedroom, full kitchen, sitting area with a wood burning stove for those chilly nights, as well as a private stone patio with bubbling fountain. Nan’s Cottage is named after Lucien Powell’s wife who once ran a boarding house on the property. This beautifully appointed cottage is decorated in the shabby chic style with soft muted colors and wood beams. Cozy up with your loved one on the sofa in front of the electric fireplace. This cottage boasts a modern spacious bathroom with a glass shower and a private stone patio located next to the woods. Our delectable, gourmet breakfast is delivered to each of the cottages to be savored in the privacy of your room or on your private patio.

On the second floor of the main house, you may choose to stay in one of our beautifully appointed accommodations, the two-room Ashby Suite or the Dogwood Room, both with stunning marble baths and wood burning fireplaces with hand carved mantels. Our delicious breakfast can be served on one of our stone porches, in our formal dining room, or in the privacy of your room.

To make your stay even more special, our guests can set up a massage with one of our certified massage therapists, relax and unwind in your own private yoga session, or treat yourself to a 3 course dinner prepared and served by our private chef.

We invite you to be our guests at the tranquil Airwell B&B , nestled near the Blue Ridge Mountains- an oasis of exceptional lodging comfort and amenities, heartfelt hospitality, and soul-inspiring surroundings.
