The Artisan Trail Network is a visitor-directed experiential “journey of discovery” connecting creative and agricultural artisan businesses for the ultimate Virginia travel experience. The Artisan Trail Network is designed to help visitors navigate a unique adventure and explore the byways and back roads, visiting rtisan studios, agri-artisan gardens & farms, wineries & breweries, galleries & craft related venues, local businesses & eclectic shops and historical & cultural points of interest.

Artisan Trail Network social media feeds are a quick and easy way to share content with multiple social media sites.

The Artisan Trail Network is positioned as a great resource for artisan business and community related content and as a conduit for Virginia tourism.

One of the most used features on the Artisan Trail Network is the dynamic Google map.

Let visitors see exactly where you are on an interactive Google map. Your map pin shows your location, displays your name, tagline, address, and links directly to your profile page.


Participation Details

 

GENERAL CRITERIA – ALL ARTISAN TRAIL NETWORK SITES

  • The site features and promotes a genuine Virginia visitor experience.
  • The site focuses and guarantees Virginnia authenticity and quality.
  • The site celebrates the cultural diversity of the region and reflects positively on its heritage.
  • The site is well marked with a business sign (an ACV trail sign will be provided once qualified). 
  • The site specifies and maintains regular business hours. Seasonal hours are acceptable.  Businesses that are open to the public "by appointment only" or fewer than two days per week will be considered.
  • The site is visitor friendly, clean, safe and provides adequate restrooms, directional signs, icon denoting handicap accessibility, etc. 
  • The site is easily accessible by 2-wheel drive vehicles (4-wheel drive only access areas do not qualify).
  • The site has safe, accessible parking (for at least two vehicles)
  • The site promotes, connects and collaborates with other participants on the Artisan Trail Network.
  • The site is featured or agrees to be featured on the Virginia Tourism Corporation website: Virginia.org 
  •  

Program Disclaimer: All trail site businesses/owners are solely responsible for complying with zoning regulations, ordinances, health and business licensing requirements as well as any required or discretionary insurance liability coverage in addition to taking steps to reduce/eliminate risk due to negligence.

The enrollment application is subject to review to ensure the business meets participation criteria. Once you are approved, you will receive an official 'welcome' with the login codes and a trail sign will be made available.

ARTISAN STUDIOS

Examples: Crafters, sculptors, painters, photographers, etc. 

Individual Virginia artisans of Craft (3-D, roots in functionality) and/or Fine Art (2-D, to include photography) who create works without the use of kits or commercial models, and whose primary components are not manufactured are eligible. ACV juried status is not required.

  • The artist’s studio has qualified as a business by presenting evidence of at least one of the following for approval: website; photo, maps, brochure, video or another expressed written method. The artist’s studio may also provide demonstrations and/or workshops on their art.
  •  
  • The artist’s studio features 5 or fewer artists (including the owner of the studio). If more than 5 artists are featured, the site must upgrade to “an affiliate venue”.
  •

ART-RELATED RETAIL VENUES / AFFILIATES

Examples: Retail galleries and gift shops, guilds, etc.

Affiliates are businesses and organizations that support the mission and work of ACV. Art-Related Venues are venues, businesses and organizations, for-profit or not-for-profit, engaged in exhibiting or promoting or selling the works of a multiple of local craft artisans and may also represent artists of other media. The affiliate venue promotes original works and/or exhibitions featuring local artists .

  • The affiliate venue, gift shop and/or gallery prioritizes “American‐made” with an emphasis on locally created art from the trail region. Shops with a strong product line of imports or crafts made from kits may not qualify.

AGRI-ARTISANS

Examples: Family farms, farm markets, roadside stands, wineries, breweries, distilleries, cideries, orchards, petting zoo, corn maize, aqua-culture and watermen businesses, etc.

  • An Agri-Artisan is an agricultural-based Virginia agri-tourism business or farm or on-water businesses that relies on natural resources of the land or Virginia's water-ways. Such enterprises produce food, fiber, unique crops or livestock, add value to traditional agricultural products, or offer recreational, education, nature or other farm (land/water) based activities, such as markets & roadside stands. 
  •  
  • The Agri‐Artisan site provides a cultural heritage interpretative experience 
  • The site has qualified as a business by presenting evidence of at least one of the following for approval: photo, exhibits, demonstrations, workshops, maps, brochures, video or another expressed written method.
  • The site’s agricultural and food products prioritize locally grown or produced goods.
  •  

$60 PER YEAR

+ $40 one-time setup fee

RESTAURANTS

Examples: Restaurants, Oyster Bars, Diners, Night Clubs, Cafés, Food Trucks, etc.

As a Supporting Trail Site the restaurant must be a locally-owned business or site that supports the ACV Artisan Trail Network program, offering visitors places to eat.

The restaurant meets four or more of the following:

  • Show local artisan crafts on the walls, in display cases or uses handcrafted items as tableware
  • Have interpretive materials that tell about the artisan crafts on the premises
  • Regularly have live, local music
  • Feature locally grown produce, wines, beers, Virginia Oysters, etc.
  • Offer a selection of Virginia indigenous food             
  • Serve Virginia heritage recipes                                  
  • Have offerings authentic to the establishment
  • Be an architecturally significant building
  • Have a unique authentic regional claim to fame and/or be a family owned and operated business

LODGING

Examples: Bed & Breakfast, campsites, cabins, inns, boutique hotels, Air-B&B (specific review required), etc. 

As a Supporting Trail Site the lodging must be a locally-owned business that supports the ACV Artisan Trail Network program, offering visitors places to stay.

  • The lodging site is locally‐owned/managed and/or historically significant in the region. Franchises and chains will only be considered in areas where lodging is at an extreme minimum.
  • All lodging sites must feature/promote the Artisan Trail Network and locally participating businesses. 
  • In the event a lodging property does not qualify, yet the property has an authentic Virginia restaurant  it may qualify as a “restaurant” (see Restaurants tab for specific restaurant criteria).

Examples: Historic & cultural centers, museums, information/ interpretive, educational, recreational;7, events/festivals

As a Supporting Trail Site the the Point of Interest/Cultural site supports the ACV Artisan Trail Network program, offering visitors activities or content of cultural interest.

  • A point of interest site can specifically features the cultural heritage within the region.
  • A point of interest site can feature educational activities that are open to the public and provide content specific to region whether artistic, environmental, historical, or business related.
  • A point of interest site features recreational and/or event activities.
  •
